The hottest hatch grows up

The FL5 Type R is faster and more refined than its predecessor — without losing the edge that made the FK8 a legend.

Honda's latest Civic Type R arrived with a Nurburgring lap record and a price tag to match. The question for Singapore buyers is whether it works as more than a weekend toy.

We lived with one through a week of commutes and a track day at Sepang.

Dual personality

In Comfort mode the Type R is genuinely civilised — the adaptive dampers soften, the exhaust quiets and the clutch is manageable in traffic. Switch to +R and the car transforms: sharper throttle, heavier steering and an exhaust note that turns heads at every tunnel.

Track day essentials

At Sepang the Type R reminded us why it holds the record.

Practicality

It is still a Civic underneath — four doors, a usable boot and rear seats for occasional passengers. Just do not expect them to thank you for the ride quality in +R mode.

Conclusion

The FL5 Type R is the most complete hot hatch Honda has ever built.

Expensive, yes — but nothing else delivers this much capability in one package.
