NIO arrives in Singapore in the first quarter of 2026, and it is bringing its battery-swap network with it.
NIO has confirmed that it will open its first Singapore showroom in the first quarter of 2026, making it the third mainland Chinese marque to set up a full retail operation here in as many years. The brand will be represented locally by a wholly owned subsidiary rather than a franchised distributor, which is the same route it took in Norway and Germany.
Two models are expected at launch. The ET5 saloon and the EL6 crossover both sit in the space above the Category A cars most private buyers shop in, so NIO will be competing for the same wallets as the Tesla Model 3, the BYD Seal and the BMW i4.
NIO’s calling card is a battery that is not bolted in for life. Drive into a swap station, stay in the car, and a robot exchanges the depleted pack for a full one in about five minutes. The company has said it intends to install stations in Singapore rather than sell the cars alone, though it has not confirmed how many or where.
A swap network is a heavy piece of infrastructure to justify on an island this size, and the details that decide whether it works are the ones NIO has not published yet.
NIO has declined to give indicative prices, and with COE premiums where they are, any figure quoted now would be out of date by the time the first cars land. Expect the ET5 to be positioned against the Model 3 Long Range rather than below it.
A third Chinese brand with its own showroom is no longer surprising. A brand that wants to build a swap network on an island where land is the scarcest thing there is, however, is worth watching closely.
If NIO gets even a handful of stations running before the first deliveries, it will have something none of its rivals can match. If it does not, the ET5 and EL6 will have to win on their own merits, and that is a much harder fight.
