The facelift that finally adds a motor
The 992.2 Carrera borrows the GTS’s cooling hardware and the Turbo’s brakes, and it is quicker everywhere for it.
Porsche does not do dramatic mid-life facelifts, and the 992.2 Carrera is no exception. Stand it next to the car it replaces and the giveaways are the light bar across the tail, the new front intakes and a set of wheels you will only recognise if you spend too much time on configurators.
Underneath, the changes are larger than the sheet metal suggests. The base Carrera now runs the intercoolers and turbochargers that used to be reserved for the GTS, and the brakes are lifted straight off the old 911 Turbo. Output rises to 394bhp, which is 9bhp more than before and enough to shave a tenth off the century sprint.
On the road in Singapore
The problem with a 911 here has never been the engine. It is everything else: the expansion joints on the CTE, the multi-storey ramps, the humps outside every school. The 992.2 handles all three better than a car this focused has any right to. Put the dampers in their softer setting and the ride is genuinely civilised, and the nose lifter clears anything short of a loading bay kerb.
What is worth ticking on the options list
The Carrera is complete as it comes, and the temptation to spend another forty thousand dollars on the configurator should be resisted. Four boxes earn their money.
- Rear-axle steering, which shrinks the car in a car park and steadies it on the expressway.
- The front-axle lift system, which is close to essential given local ramp angles.
- The Sport Chrono pack, mostly for the extra damper mode rather than the stopwatch.
- Adaptive sports seats, which hold you far better than the standard chairs on a long drive north.
Living with it
Boot space up front is unchanged at 132 litres, which swallows a weekend bag and a laptop and nothing else. The rear seats remain a place to put shopping. Real-world consumption sat at 11.4L/100km over a week of mixed driving, which is respectable for the performance on offer.
Conclusion
The 992.2 Carrera is the least dramatic update Porsche could have made and, on the evidence of a week with one, exactly the right one. Nothing about the car has been softened, and the parts that were already good have quietly been made better.
It is not a cheap way to buy 394bhp, and it never has been. But as the only sports car on sale that you could genuinely drive to work every day of the week, it remains without a direct rival.
